Longpass filters, also known as longpass edge filters, are designed to transmit wavelengths greater than the cut-on wavelength of the filter. They are commonly used in industrial and life sciences applications such as microscopy and fluorescence instrumentation to isolate specific portions of the spectrum. These filters are typically designed for a 0° angle of incidence, while longpass dichroic filters are designed for use at a 45° angle of incidence. They can also be combined with shortpass filters to create custom bandpass filters, and some longpass edge filters can function as cold mirrors to minimize heat buildup from infrared radiation. It's important to note that the term "high-pass filter" refers to frequency instead of wavelength, and actually refers to shortpass filters, while "lowpass filter" similarly describes frequency and refers to longpass filters.
