Air Cooling

The system has a simple structure and is easy to maintain. It was widely used in early electric passenger vehicles, such as the Nissan Leaf and Kia Soul EV, and is also widely adopted in current electric buses and electric logistics vehicles.
Liquid Cooling
The liquid cooling technology removes the heat generated by the battery through liquid convection heat transfer and lowers the battery temperature. The liquid medium has a high heat transfer coefficient, large heat capacity, and fast cooling speed, which is very effective in reducing high temperatures and improving the consistency of the battery pack temperature field. At the same time, the volume of the thermal management system is relatively small. The liquid cooling system has a relatively flexible form: the battery cells or modules can be immersed in the liquid, cooling channels can be set between the battery modules, or a cooling plate can be used at the bottom of the battery. When the battery is in direct contact with the liquid, the liquid must be highly insulating (such as mineral oil) to avoid short circuits. At the same time, the airtightness requirements of the liquid cooling system are also relatively high. In addition, there are requirements for mechanical strength, vibration resistance, and lifespan.

Direct Cooling
Direct cooling (direct refrigerant cooling): Using the principle of the latent heat of evaporation of the refrigerant (such as R134a), an air conditioning system is established in the vehicle or battery system. The evaporator of the air conditioning system is installed in the battery system. The refrigerant evaporates in the evaporator and quickly and efficiently removes the heat from the battery system to complete the cooling operation of the battery system.
Currently, the direct cooling method is basically used in electric passenger vehicles. A typical example is the BMW i3 (the i3 has two cooling solutions: liquid cooling and direct cooling).
