Glabridin (Licorice Extract)
Glabridin is an isoflavane found in the root extract of licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra). Glabridin is considered to be a phytoestrogen and has been associated with numerous biological properties ranging from antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, anti-atherogenic effects, to the regulation of energy metabolism. A glabridin-enriched extract is widely used in a cosmetic formulation as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and skin whitening agent.

Glabridin, extracted from Licorice, is a widely accepted substance. that has the effect of whitening and anti-irritation. It is a type that contains at least 40% active Glabridin. commonly known as Licorice PT40.
Summary of research results efficiency in each aspect of Glabridin:
1. Anti-Irritation: Downregulation of iNOS and elevation of cAMP mediate the anti-inflammatory effect of glabridin in rats with ulcerative colitis.
2. Whitening: Inhibitory mechanisms of glabridin on tyrosinase.
3. Whitening / Anti-Irritation: The inhibitory effect of glabridin from licorice extracts on melanogenesis and inflammation.

Glabridin (Licorice Extract)
Licorice is a skincare superstar thanks to two magic properties:
Nr. 1 magic property is that it has skin-lightening or to say it another way depigmenting properties. The most active part is called glabridin. The topical application of 0.5% glabridin was shown to inhibit UVB caused pigmentation of guinea pigs. Licorice is considered to be one of the safest skin lightening agents with the fewest side effects. The amount of glabridin in commercial licorice extracts can vary a lot. We have seen extracts with only 4% glabridin as well as 40% glabridin, the latter one is a very-very expensive ingredient.
Nr. 2 magic property is that licorice is a potent anti-inflammatory. Glabridin has also some soothing properties but the main active anti-inflammatory component is glycyrrhizin. It's used to treat several skin diseases that are connected to inflammation including atopic dermatitis, rosacea or eczema.
Oh, and one more thing: glabridin seems to be also an antioxidant, which is just one more reason to be happy about licorice root extract on an ingredient list.
