HEAT TREATMENT For high hardness, tensile strength, and fatigue strength, annealing can be performed at 1,700-1,900°F (927 - 1,038°C).
DAXUN 6-4™ Grade 5 alloy allows for multiple heat treatment options.1. Anneal: 1,275 -1,400°F (691 - 760°C), ½ to 2 hours, air or furnace cool.2. Stress Relief Anneal: 1,000 -1,200°F (538 - 649°C), 1 to 8 hours, air or furnace cool.3. Solution Heat Treat: 1,675 -1,750°F (913 - 954°C), 1 hour, water quench.4. Aging: 975 -1,025°F (524 - 552°C), 4 to 8 hours, air cool.In the solution treated and aged condition, rapid quenching of small sections yields optimum properties, while larger sections and/or delayed quenching may result in suboptimal properties.
HARDNESS Typical hardness in the annealed condition is Rockwell C 30-34, and Rockwell C 35-39 in the solution and aged condition.
Forgeability/FormabilityTi-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar is forged at 1,750°F (954°C) with a final forging temperature of 1,450°F (788°C). A minimum of 35% reduction is recommended for achieving optimal properties.The Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar, renowned for its resilience, presents challenges in forming at room temperature-even in its annealed state. For severe operations like bending or stretching, the material can be handled at elevated temperatures up to 1,200°F (649°C) without compromising its mechanical properties. Hot sizing and forming are feasible through creep forming within the range of 1,000 - 1,200°F (538 - 649°C).MachinabilityThe Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy bar is amenable to machining using techniques suited for austenitic stainless steel. Optimum results require slow machining speeds, robust tools, high feeds, and substantial application of non-chlorinated cutting fluids.
WeldabilityThe Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 alloy rod is easily weldable in both the annealed and partially aged conditions. Post-weld heat treatment facilitates the aging process. Care must be taken to avoid contamination by oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen. Fusion welding should be performed in an inert gas-filled chamber or using inert gas to shield the molten metal and adjacent zones, complemented by a tail shield. Spot, seam, and flash welding are possible without a protective atmosphere.
Special ConsiderationsThe Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 titanium alloy rod is susceptible to contamination by hydrogen during improper pickling and by oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon during processes like forging, heat treating, and brazing. Such contamination can reduce ductility, thereby affecting notch sensitivity and forming characteristics.
