PPG Architectural Coatings WOOD GUARDIANTM Penetrating Stain/Finish GENERAL DESCRIPTION PRODUCT DATA WOOD GUARDIAN™ PP835 RECOMMENDED USES FEATURES / BENEFITS WOOD GUARDIAN Penetrating Stain /Finish (Phenolic/Tung Oil) No. PP835 is an excellent, highly water resistant, interior/exterior, phenolic/tung oil penetrating finish. It is designed to penetrate, seal, harden and protect a wide variety of interior and exterior surfaces. Use as a clear or tinted finish for bare wood surfaces such as new or resanded decks, mill work, wood floors and furniture, or as a stain under varnish on floors, doors, etc. On plywood, use as a protective coat or as a water resistant undercoat for paints and enamels. Use as a sealer/finish on concrete, flagstone, slate or brick floors, terraces and hearths to prevent dusting and, in garages, oil staining. WOOD GUARDIAN Penetrating Stain/Finish (Phenolic/Tung Oil) No. PP835 is ideal for large warehouse and industrial floors. • Mill work • Wood floors • Furniture • Concrete floors/walkways/patios • Flagstone, slate, brick floors/hearths/terraces • Log homes • Wood decks Product Type: Phenolic/Tung oil VOC: As supplied (untinted): 4.54 lb/gal (544 g/l) When thinned to maximum: 4.58 lb/gal (548 g/l) Sheen: Satin Percent Solids: Weight: 36 ± 2% Volume: 30 ± 2% Weight/Gallon: 7.1 lb Viscosity (Initial): A1 (maximum) Gardner Bubble Viscosity Thinner: Thinning is not required under nor mal environmental and application conditions. If thinning is necessary, to stay within the 550g/l VOC limit, thin sparingly with Porter Paint Thinner No. 5132 up to 2 ounces per gallon. Do not exceed local regulations. Clean-up: Porter Paint Thinner No. 5132. Recommended Spread Rate (Theoretical): Prime Coat: 500 to 700 sq. ft./gal. Finish Coats: 800 to 1,000 sq. ft./gal. Coverage does not include variation due to application methods, surface proposity, and/or mixing. Dry time (70ºF @ 50% R.H.): To Recoat: 4 hours To Walk On: 16 hours To Buff: 24 hours (Drying times listed may vary depending on temperature, humidity, color, and air movement.) Flash Point: 103ºF (39ºC) Flame Spread Rating: Class A (0-25) (See Porter Technical Bulletin No. 9: Flame Spread Rating.) Federal Specification Crossover: None (See Porter Technical Bulletin No. 6: Federal Specification Performance Crossover.) LIMITATIONS OF USE Product is not designed to function as a surface coating. Do not build a surface film. Remove with a squeegee or cloth any material that puddles or does not penetrate the surface within a few minutes. For exterior applications, product must be tinted with a minimum of 4 ounces of Porter DESIGN SPECTRUM® Colorants (stir frequently during application to maintain uniform color). CAUTION: Do not place product soaked rags in non-approved containers, or pile them where spontaneous combustion or a fire hazard could develop. If appropriate containers are not available, weight the rags down in water. NOTE: Partial containers of material will harden in the can. To save leftover product, pour into a container small enough for product to fill completely. Attach the label to retain product identification, safety information and application instructions. RECOMMENDED SYSTEMS WOOD GUARDIAN Penetrating Stain/Finish (Phenolic/Tung Oil) No. PP835 is typically applied as a one coat, or two coat “wet on wet”*, system (or as a stain under varnish) over properly prepared wood, concrete, brick, slate and stone surfaces. Material that puddles or does not penetrate into the surface is to be removed with a squeegee or cloth. (NOTE: An exception to removal of the surface build exists with fine furniture finishing where a surface build-up of thin layers results in a high quality, rich satin sheen surface.) *NOTE: Wet on wet is the process of applying the second coat while the first coat is still wet but has penetrated sufficiently for additional material to further soak into the surface. The guideline to remove excess material that does not penetrate still applies. TINTING AND BASE INFORMATION Tint with Porter DESIGN SPECTRUM® Colorants per label directions up to 12 ounces per gallon. NOTE: For finishing wood, see the current Porter Exterior Colors card, semi-transparent section, or the Porter Decorator Interior Wood Stain color card. To approximate Porter exterior semi-transparent stain colors (used in No. PP1842 base), use the full stain formula. To approximate clear base stain colors (used in No. PP832 base), tint with1/2 the full formula. Test tinted stain on a piece of scrap or in a little noticed location before proceeding to be sure that color and appearance are acceptable.
