Disposable Breathing Bacteria Filter Tracheostomy HME Filter Type 3 The HME filter, also known as a heat and moisture exchanger (HME), is a device with a fine mesh structure made of several layers of water-absorbing materials and hydrophilic compounds. One end is connected to the artificial airway while the other is in use. One end is connected to the ventilator pipeline. The working principle is that when the gas is exhaled, the heat and moisture in the exhaled breath are retained. When inhaling, the gas passes through the HME filter, and the heat and moisture are brought back into the airway. The HME filter has a certain filtering effect on bacteria, which can reduce the risk of bacterial contamination of the pipeline.
The HME filter is suitable for patients with non-COPD and low secretions in the respiratory tract. For patients with more COPD sputum and long-term mechanical ventilation, the HME filter cannot be used alone, otherwise, it will cause insufficient airway humidification and block the artificial airway. In addition, HME filters have water absorption and hydrophobic points. When using water-absorbent HME filters, you should closely observe the changes in airway resistance. When using a hydrophobic HME filter, if condensed water accumulates inside, the water should be poured out gently instead of being thrown out, so as not to allow water to enter the HME filter and increase airway resistance.
