A profile projector is an optical measuring instrument that directs light at an object on its stage and employs lenses to display an enlarged image of the object on a screen, enabling the user to measure its dimensions and check its shape.
Since the profile projector is a device for measuring the dimensions of an object, it must accurately enlarge the shape of the object image. Hence, distortion in the projection lens must be minimized as much as possible. Since the exact size of the object needs to be established by measuring the enlarged image, the projection magnification must also be extremely accurate. Moreover, as the lens produces a much larger image than that produced by the lenses of a microscope or a camera, the degree of difficulty involved in the design of the lens is all the greater.
