It is a solid or white powder with high solubility in water, but the dissolution rate is slow, and the aqueous solution shows an acidic reaction. The complex of divalent metal ions is more stable than the complex of monovalent metal ions and is easily hydrolyzed into orthophosphate in warm water, Chemicalbook acid or alkali solution.
Sodium hexametaphosphate is highly hygroscopic and becomes sticky after absorbing moisture. For certain metal ions (such as calcium, magnesium, etc.), it has the ability to form soluble complexes, so it can be used to soften water.
