The guide rail slider of CNC machine tools must have multiple requirements such as high guidance accuracy, high
mobility, smoothness and seismic resistance during low-speed movement. As an important component of machine
tools, guide sliders are precision components produced in bulk, and their accuracy and size requirements must be
ensured. For this reason, many manufacturers adopt the cubic boron nitride grinding technology to ensure the
high-quality manufacturing and performance performance of guide sliders.
Grinding the guide rail is a crucial step in the machining process, so choosing the correct grinding wheel is very
important. According to the material of the guide rail, we can use different grinding wheels to achieve better
grinding results.
For general guide rail materials, such as GCr15, G20CrMo or carbon steel profiles, we can use grinding wheels
with high hard abrasives, such as cubic boron nitride grinding wheels. This type of grinding wheel has a hardness
second only to diamond, good durability and conductivity, and low heat generation. It is mainly suitable for
grinding difficult to machine materials such as bearing steel, stainless steel, and high alloy steel.
When selecting the abrasive particle size of the grinding wheel, due to the fact that the guide rail generally adopts
precision grinding and has a small margin, a lower roughness value is required. Therefore, a grinding wheel with
finer abrasive particles can be selected. In terms of the selection of grinding wheel hardness, we recommend using
slightly harder grinding wheels during precision grinding to support grinding accuracy and roughness. But when
the thermal conductivity of the workpiece material is poor and prone to deformation and cracks, such as grinding
hard alloys, a softer grinding wheel should be selected.
In addition to the above indicators, there are other indicators that need to be considered. Due to the fact that most
linear guide surfaces are composed of curved and inclined surfaces, it is more appropriate to use circular or end
face grinding during grinding. In order to improve grinding efficiency, we can also use multiple formed grinding
wheels and auxiliary grinding heads (grinding side planes) to achieve formed grinding, and use a combination of
formed grinding wheels to grind out the guide rail surface in one go. Although multi wheel form grinding and
combined form grinding have high grinding efficiency, the cubic Boron nitride grinding head has a fine structure
and is suitable for mass production.
