Sodium tripolyphosphate is also known as pentasodium phosphate, sodium pyrometaphosphate, STPP, pentasodium tripolyphosphate. It is white powder or crystalline powder. Soluble in water, its aqueous solution is alkaline. Good fluidity, relative molecular mass 367.86, melting point 622ºC, bulk density 1000kg/m3, density 2.52g /cm3 (20ºC), vapor pressure < 0.1hPa (20 °C), refractive index 1.658, PH 9.0-10.0 (25ºC, 1% in H2O). Soluble in water, its aqueous solution is alkaline. Commonly used in food, as water retention agent, quality improver, pH regulator, metal chelating agent.
Sodium tripolyphosphate aqueous solution is weakly alkaline (the PH value of 1% aqueous solution is about 9.7), and it forms the role of suspension (similar to emulsion) in the PH range of 4.3 ~ 14, that is, the dispersion effect. Sodium tripolyphosphate can also make liquid and solid particles better soluble in liquid (such as water) media, so that the appearance of the solution is completely transparent, like a true solution, which is solublization. Because sodium tripolyphosphate has the above unique properties, it becomes an important ideal raw material in laundry powder.

Used as an efficient water softener for cooling water treatment in power stations, rolling stock, boilers and fertilizer plants.
Sodium tripolyphosphates are used in detergents, as additives, soap synergists and prevent bar soap crystallization and frosting, industrial water softener, tannery pre-tanning agent, dyeing agent, oil well mud control agent, paper oil pollution prevention agent, paint, kaolin, magnesium oxide, calcium carbonate and other suspension treatment effective dispersant. Edible grade sodium tripolyphosphate can be used as a food modifier for various fish products and a clarifying agent for beverages.
