Origins
In China, the art of inner painting originated at the age of Emperor Jia Qing of the Qing Dynasty, and has a history of over 200 years. Some skilled painters began to paint on the interior of transparent glass bottles or crystal pots. The themes can be figures, landscapes, flowers and birds. One of the very representative inside-painting artworks is the Inner-painted Snuff Bottle, which was designed as a fancy container carrying remedy for common illnesses like cold, headache and stomach disorder. Due to the exquisite craftsmanship, the snuff bottles became popular among the Chinese upper class and nobles.
