Chemical Property/Description:
Green crystalline powder. Soluble in water is red, soluble in ethanol is yellow , and its solution is used to stain vacuoles in cells and identify cell death. Living cells are stained red, while dead cells do not change color.
In a neutral or slightly alkaline environment, the living cells of the plant can absorb a large amount of Basic Red 5 and secrete it into the vacuole. Since the vacuole is generally acidic, Basic Red 5 entering the vacuole dissociates a large number of cations to give a cherry red color
1. Stable at room temperature and pressure.
2. Form colored ion association with halogenated anions such as iodide, and indium.
Main Uses:
Basic Red 5 can be used as an acid-base indicator, pH6.8(red) ~ 8.0(yellow), it is an indicator of the alkalinity of water, nitrite and urine, and in histochemistry it is used as a hydrolysis indicator of fats. At the same time, it is also a good biological staining agent; Niss small particle staining for nerve cells is used together with Genna green for blood in vitro staining. Neutral red is widely used in the photometric determination of iodide and the preparation of neutral red paper.
