Its hardness is between corundum and diamond, its mechanical strength is higher than corundum, and it is brittle and sharp. Green silicon carbide is made from petroleum coke and high-quality silica as the main raw material, adding salt as an additive, and smelted at high temperature in a resistance furnace. Its hardness is between corundum and diamond, and its mechanical strength is higher than that of corundum. Black Silicon Carbide is brittle and sharp. It has a good electrical and heat conductivity. Its Knoophandness is 3100-3280kg/mm2. Green Silicon Carbide is a synthetic brittle carborundum with high thermal conductivity and high strength which get no decrease in 1000ºC( 7.5 times stronger than Alumina) Green silicon carbide is characterized by extreme hardness (Mohs 9.4/2600 Knoop) which only ranks after CBN and B4C. The abrasives made of silicon carbide are suitable for working on cast iron,non-ferrous metal,rock, leather,rubber,etc.It is also broadly used as refractory material and metallurgical additive.
