CE marking for keyboards is a necessary condition for keyboard products to enter the EU market, the following is the relevant introduction:
Directives and standards involved in the certification
- Low Voltage Directive (LVD): Keyboards are required to be able to work safely at rated voltage, and there are strict regulations on electrical insulation, protection against electric shock, and electrical clearance and creepage distances, etc., such as the EN 60950-1 standard, which stipulates the safety requirements for information technology equipment.
- Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive (EMC): Keyboards need to meet standards such as EN 55032 and EN 55035 to control electromagnetic interference and ensure that there is no interference with other electronic equipment during normal use, as well as good electromagnetic immunity and the ability to work stably in a certain electromagnetic environment.
- Radio Equipment Directive (RED): If the keyboard has a wireless function, such as Bluetooth keyboard, it needs to comply with the RED directive, following standards such as EN 300 328, to regulate the frequency range of wireless transmission, transmit power, modulation method, etc.
- RoHS Directive: Restricts the use of lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls and their ethers, and other hazardous substances in keyboards to ensure that the products are environmentally friendly and reduce the impact on the environment and human health.
Test Items
- Electrical Safety Test: Includes voltage withstand test to check the insulation performance of the keyboard under high voltage; grounding continuity test to ensure that the grounding system of the keyboard is reliable; and leakage current test to detect whether the leakage current of the keyboard is within the safe range during normal operation.
- Electromagnetic compatibility test: conducted harassment test, measuring the keyboard through the power cord and other conduction path generated by electromagnetic interference; radiated harassment test, detecting the keyboard to the surrounding space of the electromagnetic energy radiated; electrostatic discharge immunity test, simulate the human body static electricity on the keyboard of the discharge, the examination of the keyboard's ability to resist static electricity and so on.
- Wireless performance test: for wireless keyboard, frequency error test, check the accuracy of the wireless transmitter frequency; transmit power test, to ensure that the transmitter power in line with the standard requirements; sensitivity test, to assess the ability of the keyboard to receive signals.
- Harmful substance testing: Chemical analysis and other methods are used to detect whether the keyboard shell, keys, circuit boards and other components contain excessive harmful substances.
Certification process
- Submission of application: The manufacturer submits an application for CE certification of the keyboard to the certification body, providing detailed information about the product, such as product specifications, circuit schematic diagrams, PCB layout and so on.
- Product testing: certification body in accordance with the relevant standards for keyboard testing, such as electrical safety, electromagnetic compatibility, wireless performance, harmful substances detection.
- Audit and evaluation: the certification body of the test results and technical documents for audit and evaluation, to determine whether the product meets the requirements of CE certification.
- Issuance of certificates: If the keyboard product passes the test and audit assessment, the certification body will issue a CE certificate, allowing manufacturers to apply the CE mark on the product, indicating that the product complies with the relevant EU directives and standards.
